Flashback Friday 37: Sing Like You've Been Kicked In The Balls

I thought I'd continue with the theme of showing the #1 song from 20 years ago this week, but then it turned out it was this:

Tiffany - Could've Been

Um, yeah.

Anyway.

Let's look at the #1 song from 25 years ago this week instead:

Men At Work - Land Down Under

So among the inane things that I perpetually wonder about, I wonder if Australians hate this song. I wonder if they want nothing to do with this stereotype-inducing fluffy karaoke classic. Or do they get wasted and scream this offkey in bars every night because they think it's the best. song. ever (because it is)? Who knows. I did see MAW perform this song at an equestrian racetrack, which was kind of cool and kind of sad simultaneously.

But Land Down Under is nothing but chump change compared to what was #1 this week, 30 years ago:

Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive

THIRTY years ago! Damn, we're old.

From this video you could also pretty much see why these guys perpetually since in falsetto. If I wore tight pants like that I'd be crumpled on the floor crying for mercy.

So...which of the three songs would you rank best? Would you put all three on your iPod? Or none?

Have a great weekend.

"Stayin' Alive" and "Down Under."

The only Tiffany song that I would admit to owning is her cover of "I Think We're Alone Now."

But let's be honest -- when it comes to pseudo-redheads of the 80s, Belinda Carlisle gets my vote. She was none the worse for wear after her coke binges when she was with the Go-Go's. Sure the videos are contrived, but hey ... it was the 80s.

"Down Under" is on my iPod along with most of Men at Work's first two albums. I guess I'd therefore rank it #1. The music sounds a lot better without the images from the goofy MTV 1.0 videos. Bee Gees are ranked #2, but unlike Men at Work, the Bee Gees sound better in the context of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. As for the Tiffany song, somehow I managed to miss that one, and I think I'm better off for it. It's #3 by default.

the bee gees hands down!
... and the video made it believable that they could sing like that w/o sound enhancement.
wow.

Ok, comparing Tiffany to Belinda Carlisle is like comparing Warrant to Motley Crue. Uh, scratch that analogy. I thought Belinda was hot at some point before she faded into obscurity (again).

How did Tiffany get a recording contract, that's what I want to know.

David - The only other MAW songs I know are "Johnny Be Good" and "Who Can It Be Now?". I have no idea what two album's worth of their songs could even be like. Props to you for having them on you iPod in any case.

T' -

How'd the video make it believable that they sang without sound enhancements? Was it the falsetto-making pants or something else entirely?
